Record keeping is a skill I think everyone should have. The present is only for today. The truth is that even the sharpest mind will only remember a fragment of "this" present years to come. What enables us to relive these cherished moments are the records that we are able to keep now, while still in the "present."
If all that John ( in the bible ) was doing when Jesus was declaring, " I am the bread of life," was
- Listening attentively ( This is Good )
- Basking in the euphoria of the moment ( Hallelujah )
- Astounded by his vast knowledge and understanding ( Who wouldn't ? )
But
Did not later write things down or keep a record of the things Jesus said and did, we "might" not have the privilege of enjoying them today. The bible exists today because people kept records. We did not live during those times, but we have been able to relive them over and over again.
Now, What kind of Records Should I keep?
This is a question I often get, and my reply has always been the same.
Start with whatever comes to mind now. The list will grow over time ( Trust me on this )
Records cover a lot of things.
- Some keep diaries and thought journals.
- Some keep purchase receipts or daily food calories
- Some take a lot of pictures and store them online
- One of my friends has a dream journal
Decide what part of the present you will want to relive in the future.
... and keep something in the store.
I keep a lot of records. I track all my income, bills, expenses, giving, etc., name it. One of the reasons I have come to love this is the fact that keeping records of the present helps me to make better-informed decisions in the future. Let me share with you a recent example.
One of my friends just got a Tesla ( electric vehicle ) and was hard on the fact that it was a good investment because of the savings he would be getting on fuel. No one can ever sell me a Tesla with that argument. I keep records of every gas I have bought in my car since I have had it. When I compared my yearly gas purchase price with the price of the car, it was less than a drop in the ocean.
The advantages of keeping records are endless.
You just need to start.
80% of the things I keep a record of now were not tracked 5 years ago. Each year, during my year review. I review all the data and records for the year and it becomes clear what else i need to record. Happy Record-Keeping Pals. Keep a record of whatever makes sense to you.
